From: “Robert Williams” To: “Fred Hilf and the people at First Canadian Immigration Service ” Sent: Friday, March 03, 2006 12:12 AM After 11 years of trucking in Europe I became stale, despondent and bored of the conditions, restrictions and the way truckers are generally treated throughout the continent. I have always had a fascination for American and Canadian trucking with the wide open roads, big rigs and endless speed limits as appose to 54mph currently in Europe. 1998 I saw an opportunity for me to work as a truck driver out of Okalahoma US on the 2000 mile harvest and from that moment on I knew that’s what I wanted to do. As soon as I returned to the United Kingdom I joined a program with a relocation company called First Point International which saw me handing over vast amounts of money in exchange for a job offer and a green card for a company in Dallas, Texas. Unknown to me First Point International was being investigated for fraud and to cut a long story short I lost my job offer and all my hard earned cash. For five years I read endless stories of relocation experts taking people for everything they got and I decided I was never going to fulfill my dream, until one day after a holiday in Canada I was reading a trucking magazine in Wales, UK and that expressed a need for long haul international drivers to come and to drive in Canada. After careful thought and consideration (all of about 30 seconds) I made the phone call that was soon to change my life. I spoke to gentlemen named Mr. Fred Hilf from First Canadian Immigration Service who had plenty of time for my skepticism and questions; after all I had burned once before! Within one week Fred had sent me the initial information package which I read over and thought I think its time I tell the missus we are moving. The whole process from start to finish went flawlessly and 8 months later after selling our home, all our personal possessions armed with just the clothes on our backs there we were sitting on a flight to Canada shaking in our boots with excitement and fear as to what our future was going to hold. Our first night in Winnipeg, Canada was spent in a cozy little hotel room suffering hangovers from our leaving party the night before. So it was early off to bed as I had my first meeting the next morning with Fred and Bison. 9am just like promised Fred was sitting waiting in the hotel lobby for us and he recognized us as soon as we entered. We instantly felt at ease in Fred’s presence as dozen of phone calls brought us together like friends in business, and I felt like we had known him for years. Off we set to Bison heart in my mouth not knowing what to expect upon arrival we were greeted by a mass of gold trucks and a huge building which adorned the skyline. Bison transport is a company with over 800 tractor units, countless trailers, fitting shops, truck simulators, class rooms and the friendliest stuff ever met in my whole trucking carrier, it is a very impressive sight. My first thoughts were in awe and as it finally sunk in I thought yes I have landed on my feet here. Six months of trucking the Canadian and American roads in my new shiny Freightliner I have visited sights that I thought I would never see in my lifetime. The wages are excellent, the home time is good but most of all I get treated with the utmost respect, which I never experienced back in my homeland, Canada is now truly my home. Meeting new people everyday I get asked how I am finding Canada and was it hard giving up my previous life, I tell them yes it was hard but Canada is such a great country and I have a great job and First Canadian made the whole transition a seamless and enjoyable experience. It is not the easiest move in the world to make and it is something that you have to know in your heart you want to do, but if you're like me, dedicated and determined it will be the best move you will ever make. I wish you all the best in your decision making and hopefully your quest. Robbie Williams A.K.A Zippy
